Overview
Saving a card on file lets you charge a patient without re-entering card details every time — essential for subscriptions and handy for quick one-time charges. Cards are stored securely with the payment processor; Lobbie keeps only a safe reference (a token), not the full card number.
Adding a card
You can add a card while billing a patient or while collecting a payment:
- In the order drawer or the invoice payment screen, choose Add new card.
- Enter the card details.
- Save. The card is now available for this patient as a card on file.
Choosing which card to use
When a patient has more than one card saved, use Pick a card at the point of payment to select which one to charge.
Setting a default card
You can mark one card as the patient's default. The default card is used automatically for recurring subscription charges and is pre-selected when you collect a payment.
Removing a card
To remove a card a patient no longer wants on file, open their saved cards and delete it.
Note: If a card is used by an active subscription, update that subscription to a different card first so its recurring charges don't fail. See Recurring Billing with Subscriptions.
Security
Card entry and storage are handled by the payment processor. Full card numbers are never stored in Lobbie — only a secure token is kept so you can charge the saved card again. This keeps card handling within your PCI obligations.
Where to go next
- Billing a Patient — charge a stored card when placing an order.
- Recurring Billing with Subscriptions — the default card drives recurring charges.
